Stream Enhancement/Restoration

Stream Enhancement/Restoration

Along with an Associate Hydrologist, TQ designed a stream enhancement mitigation project in a ditched stream reach, Bozeman, MT (Client: BMW, LLC). TQ also acquired Section 404, MT 310, and DEQ Stormwater Permits for the project and submits yearly monitoring reports to the USACE. TQ also conducted oversight for the planting of willows and mitigation seed mixes and the implementation of stormwater protection measures.

Wetland Mitigation Monitoring

Wetland Mitigation Monitoring

Photopoint in a wetland mitigation monitoring site in the Bakken Oil Boom Region, Watford City, ND (Client: CKW). In general, mitigation monitoring entails establishing vegetation transects, a delineation boundary, photopoints, and identifying potential site problems such as weed infestation. Monitoring reports are submitted to the USACE yearly. TQ also provides the Client with management suggestions to enable compliance with Permit Conditions and Mitigation Goals.

Wetland and Channel Delineation

Wetland and Channel Delineation

Wetland delineation, reporting and map design in coordination with an Engineering Colleague (Client: Delaney & Co.). Typical delineation projects entail pin flagging wetland and channel boundaries, collecting stream and wetland data, wetland functional assessments, and report submittal to the Client and/or USACE during the permitting process.

Environmental Permitting

Environmental Permitting

Wetland and channel delineation followed by environmental permit applications (Client: Genesis Engineering). TQ is a full-service environmental compliance company offering field assessments, reporting and permit application. Projects such as this required a 404 Permit, but it was determined that no MT 310 permit was required because this is not a perennial stream.

Private Transportation Projects

Private Transportation Projects

Wetland and channel delineation, reporting, Section 404 Permitting, Significant Nexus research (Client: TD&H Engineering). This particular project for BNSF required a complicated wetland and channel delineation in the northern plains, and included an extensive Significant Nexus Investigation.

Wetland & Channel Mitigation Design

Wetland & Channel Mitigation Design

Illustration of typical wetland and stream mitigation project designed by TQ for Flanders Mill, Bozeman, MT (Client: Flanders Mill, LLC). This project will entail construction oversight, planting 1,200 shrubs and trees, and yearly monitoring and report submittal to the USACE. TQ successfully acquired two MT 310 and a Section 404 for this project.

TES and SOC Surveys

TES and SOC Surveys

TQ specializes in Threatened and Endangered Species (TES) and State Species of Concern (SOC) surveys. Photo is of a Threatened Ute Ladies'-tresses taken in the Gallatin Valley (Site Confidential).

Forensic Wetland Delineation

Forensic Wetland Delineation

Forensic delineation entails investigating the location of a wetland boundary that existed prior to the initiation of an activity (Client: WGM Group). To estimate where hydric conditions existed prior to disturbance, soils beneath other materials are examined and wetland vegetation boundaries are connected using two or more points of reference.

MDT BRR Investigations

MDT BRR Investigations

Wetland and channel delineation and survey for a Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) Biological Resources Report (BRR) along state highway to Bainville, MT (Client: DOWL HKM). TQ assisted with wetland and channel delineations, recorded vegetation, amphibian, reptile, and avian species along the 20-mile project corridor and provided project QA/QC.

Avian Identification and Ecology

Avian Identification and Ecology

Swallow nest identification (Cliff Swallows) for a BRR investigation in the Madison Valley (Client: Great West Engineering). Avian identification and ecology is a specialty of Lynn Bacon, Principal of TerraQuatic.

Eagle Transmitter Retrieval

Eagle Transmitter Retrieval

TQ assisted with the retrieval of a transmitter that had been attached to the tail feathers of a Golden Eagle (GOEA) (Client: MSU, Dr. Al Harmata). TQ volunteered to observe a transmitting GOEA female in the Gallatin Valley during the 2014 nesting season; two young successfully fledged during the first week of July.

DU Wetland Bank Investigation

DU Wetland Bank Investigation

TQ led a wetland delineation and vegetation community mapping for Ducks Unlimited (DU) in support of their potential mitigation bank investigation. The final report is being used by DU to support their mitigation bank proposal to the USACE.

Public Transportation Project

Public Transportation Project

Wetland and channel delineation and BRR survey/reporting along the Sun River Connector Trail project, Great Falls, MT (Client: TD&H Engineering). TQ also submits a Biological Assessment for most BRR investigations. Trail expansion in this area was required to improve the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists.

TPL Weed Managment Plan

TPL Weed Managment Plan

TQ developed a weed management plan for Trust for Public Land (TPL). The photo illustrates two adventurous young women of the Montana Conservation Corps (MCC) pulling weeds in a riparian forest along the East Gallatin River. Several times a year TQ will conduct weed management surveys and submit yearly progress reports to TPL.

TQ Volunteerism

TQ Volunteerism

TQ believes in supporting the Community and Nonprofits in their efforts to educate the public about ecological issues. TQ volunteered to locate and educate the public on a Yellowstone River Conservation District Council river trip about the Endangered Interior Least Tern. This photo is a tern nest with a one-day old chick and "pipped" egg - the chick within the egg had begun to peck the shell from the inside during the initial stages of egg hatch.
